Art
Works in Mental HealthTM is a
project aimed at promoting
the art of everyone affected by mental
ill health, including their carers. The project is sponsored by Pfizer Ltd. and
run by a team of people (see About Us for details):
some work with people who experience mental ill health
while others are experienced in creating art and using
artistic expression as a positive outlet. |
| Art Works in Mental HealthTM has been
developed to showcase the work and thereby increase understanding
of the role of art and artistic expression in the lives
of people who are affected by mental ill health. |
| Art and creativity can help people
affected by mental ill health to find an outlet for their
emotions. Their art works may also give other people a
clearer picture of what life is like for someone who is,
or has been, affected by mental illness. |
| |
| What do we mean by 'art'? |
| 'Art' means any form of creative expression
- not just painting, drawing or illustrations. It includes
photography, sculpture, carving, needlework and embroidery,
creative writing, poetry and song lyrics, ceramics and
pottery, crafts and even computer design. |

One of the key activities of Art Works in Mental HealthTM
is to put together a National Exhibition of art created
by people who have been affected by mental illness. During
2003 the exhibition will visit 5 galleries around the
UK (in London, Edinburgh, Manchester, Cardiff and Birmingham)
to give as many people as possible the opportunity to
see these forms of expression. As part of the exhibition,
a catalogue will be produced giving details of the works
and a selection of all the entries. The work may also
feature in posters and postcards, in "Reflections" magazine
published by Breakthrough, and on the website. It is for
these reasons that, regrettably, performance arts such
as dance, mime, theatre and music could not be considered. |

We
are committed to showcasing the maximum amount of work
possible but, due to the inevitable restrictions on space,
we will not be able to show all the work at the exhibition.
We have therefore set up a professional review panel to
look at all the entries and select some of them for the
exhibition. They will be looking for a wide selection
of media and a geographical cross-section of all the entries.
|
| We will aim to use as much of the remaining work
not selected for the exhibition as possible. This will
be by creating the posters, postcards, 'virtual' gallery
on this website and as many other interesting uses as
we can to showcase the talents of our contributors. |
